Music Magic presents an alternative primer program that leads into level one of the Noona Comprehensive Piano Library. Music Magic is designed for ages 4-6, although I have used it for slower 7 and 8 year olds without problems.
The course spreads the normal primer level out over two full years. The first entire year develops rhythm and playing skills without reading on the staff. Both the middle C and C-major positions are used. Letter names of notes are printed inside the oversized notation, and a few finger numbers are included.
The second year covers the normal primer level using an intervalic middle C approach. Steps and skips are emphasized over note-by-note reading, which has proven to be the most effective method. Only note values of quarter, half, dotted-half and whole are used. Only middle C and C-major hand positions are taught. A few pieces at the very end include some hands together playing.
For the younger (or slower) pupil who needs the step by step approach, Music Magic is an outstanding curriculum. Older students (7 and up in general) should begin directly in the starter level of the Comprehensive curriculum. I have been using both since their publication with tremendous results.
