Composition/writing

Composition/writing

Help, I should have this by now.

My son is doing welding via dual enrollment. I have to do English still. His evaluator suggested just technical type writing. He is doing Notgrass World History this year. He is 11th grade. I can have him doing writing assignments from this, but he still needs help.

In the past he has used Essentials in Writing and IEW SWI B. Last year I combined some skills from our IEW with Abeka 10th grade he had. I need something to keep us on track I do not think just doing world history assignments will get it done.

Thus I cannot decide what to do. I have considered EIW and SWI C, I have some Progeny Press guides, and mostly was going to use Easy Grammar 11.

Others I am looking at are SOS English 11 as he used 9 or Jensen's Format writing.

He just needs formal skills, not as much on fluff and busy work.

re: Composition/writing

What about getting out of the "homeschool" stuff and into other publishers?

Would something like
Writing on the Job
https://www.amazon.com/Writing-Job-Norton-Pocket-Guide/dp/0393039692

or
Technical Writing for Success
https://www.amazon.com/Technical-Writing-Success-Applied-English/dp/0538450487

be helpful?

Maybe Writer's Inc (if you want homeschool minded stuff) would be the skills you need to work on?

(I think I'm drooling on the Tech Writing for Success book)

and from long ago in my files I have this link to technical writing in high school. maybe it's helpful?

re: Composition/writing

Of everything you listed, the only one I have experience with is Jensen's. That does qualify as no fluff. It's a good "get it done" book.

re: Composition/writing

Thanks, I appreciate this. I will look into those mentioned. The Jensen's isn't expensive so I may get it with the Easy Grammar. Literature will remain with the World History or alternate choices from my bookshelf.

It is hard to believe I have graduated one. The welding is half days this year so I have to keep things fine tuned.

re: Composition/writing

Fairview's Guide to Composition and Essay Writing is what I'm going to use with DD this year. DS did well with Sharon Watson's Power in Their Hands.

The big difference is the size of the texts. Power in Their Hands is a big book and may be intimidating to a reluctant writer. The content is excellent and our son learned many different writing techniques using it.

re: Composition/writing

All the other curriculum sounds like a good idea, but I favor IEW. You could use SWICC B with him for high school. I will be using it this year with my 9th grader. I would highly suggest calling IEW because they can really guide you if you like IEW. They have good phone help. HTH!
