Here's an affordable idea to help avoid "fast food in the car" as we begin our busy homeschool year...

I'll have to give both of the recipes a try. We do much the same as other posters- pretzels, dried fruit, granola/fruit bars.
I also like to have yogurt and string cheese handy in the fridge for eating right before leaving for a practice or something- they will tide the kids over until we can sit down and eat again.

I make PB&J sandwiches, stack them with wax paper in between each sandwhich, wrap a group of 3-4 in foil and freeze them. I grab a pack of them on our way out the door if we'll be out during a meal time. They don't thaw too quickly so are great for park days! If you want them to thaw more quickly, put them on the dash board for a short time.

I also get the CapriSun drinks and freeze them to take so we don't have to stop for expensive drinks. They are free of artificial "stuff" and no corn syrup, real juice...I like them better for that reason. They seem expensive at the grocery store, but to get drinks for each of us at a gas station when we are out be A LOT more.

I also get packaged muffin mix and add flax and oats to eat...just add a touch more sugar or agave nectar to sweeten a bit more with the added ingredients. That adds more bulk to them and they are easy to take as well. Can also be frozen of course to thaw while out.

Some great ideas.
It's so expensive for us to stop at the store for drinks and going to fast food. (8 in our family) I'll have to try some of these ideas.
A great treat I've just discovered for my chidren is frozen yogurt. I buy the cheaper kind, stick a popsicle sick through the foil top and freeze. Then take off the foil and run the plastic under the faucet and it slides right out. They like them better and it makes them last longer. (tip: check the shape of the container. I got some that is smaller at the top than the bottom and we had to cut the bottom off to slide them out.) :-p
