I'm using CLE LA grade 1 this year for my 2nd grader. We love it and my ds is learning so much. They've revised this edition and I love the layout. It's really short lessons and we could do two a day if we weren't also doing R&S reading and phonics. (he was a slow reader, and needed extra work in this area...he's doing great now!) He's just finishing 103 and I fully expect he'll made a 100 on his test.

We're using the new edition of LA, and really like it. We're only on the first light unit, but it only takes about 5-10 minutes or so a day. It is 2 pages of work for the child, with a new concept each day, followed by review. Later in the program it turns into about 3 pages of work a day. It integrates grammar, spelling and handwriting, so you don't need separate curric. for each of those. Each Light unit includes 2 quizzes and one test. So far, it includes capital letters, periods, that sort of thing. If you are using Learning to Read, the LA starts with the 105 light unit of LTR. I know CLE is very solid so I have no problems with it at all. It isn't overly cumbersome and has plenty of review. I mentioned we are using the 2nd edition, as far as I know, they are redoing the LA year by year, so hopefully next year they'll have the 2nd edition of grade 2 done. Hope that helps!

I originally used Abeka LA K-2 and at the end of 2nd grade I used CLE LA 108-110 and LOVED it. This year for 3rd I started off with R&S English, but had to add to many other things to it and it just didn't seem to work like I hoped it would. So I switched to CLE LA 2 and we are really loving it more than I ever thought. It was slow in the begining but now were in LU 204 and she is learning SO much. I like how everything flows together and it's gentle approach. She's still getting phonics which helps in the spelling area and I love all the spelling rules that tie into the spelling words for the week. I supplement the spelling with BJU 3 so we can get more out of it. There just isn't enough words in CLE. I just match the words from BJU up with CLE so it's not confusing. So no, we don't go in order with BJU. It works really good for us. I also use Abeka cursive writing because CLE is slow and my Dd wanted to start right when 3rd grade started. I'm planning on staying with CLE LA for the long haul so I'm glad we started this year so she is used to it and the way they do things. It's a great program and they do sell extra sheets for more practice if a child needs it on a certain topic, like Nouns, verbs, etc. We haven't needed it yet cuz CLE is worded so well that a child just "gets it".
