FWIW, My oldest has always needed just a little more phonics. She is 11 and reading has not been her favorite. That said she can read. I wanted to state that over the years I have used ABeka the most(not the readers but the phonics). However, for change we did Alphaphonics and Modern Curriculum Press(Plaid) for phonics. She enjoyed MCP. When I used Alphaphonics, I used a lesson plan I found online from someone else(no longer online) not the lesson guide in book. She read all 5 sets of Bob books and then preceeded thru Henry and Mudge series(my ds likes these as well). She enjoyed these books much better than Abeka readers. I chose not to use CLE because of the markings over the letters etc in younger years. I felt with the issues she had this would only confuse her. We did this for 2nd grade.
Now for 5th, We are using BJU Reading for the first time. MY dd for the first time states she likes her reading. We used ACE before for a couple years. She liked their stories just not work involved. I wanted to mention that BJU has optional phonics supplement in 5th as well. Although you have a few years, I thought I would mention that it carries that far into the elemantary years.
For my ds age 8, reading has always come a little easier for him. Thus I may be shortchanging him in that I do not use formal reading program with him. He reads a variety of materials. He does do Bookadventure.com.
