Suggestions on a reading program? Need some input please!

re: Suggestions on a reading program? Need some input please!

If you are chugging along with OPGTR, you might try writing the phonics lessons on a white board. Big bold writing can be easier for little kids to read, plus the novelty could make things more interesting.

A fun and free phonics suppliment is Starfall.com

My son LOVED Days Go By. We never used the workbooks because I thought they would be a kill-joy.

Progressive Phonics is free now, too.

A lot of people do use the Pathway readers on their own just for reading practice, I did this w/ my older boys.

When my boys were little we loved A Beka's reading. But then I approve any method that is phonics based. :)

Is Explode the Code workbooks? Or would it qualify as reading with phonics?

I hope I'm helping here. LOL :p

The problem we have with ETC is that it progresses a little too rapidly for ds. Also, the pages with 2 sentences and a picture, which asks you which sentence makes sense, is totally frustrating to him. Sorry, that last sentence made no sense either, but I'm too brain dead tonight to correct it. I think you KWIM. :)

someone gave my just turned 8 year old son "Cowboy Sam" and this has totally turned him on to reading. He wasn't showing a big interest untill now. We bought the I Wonder Reader a few months ago from CLE and I was totally caught off guard by the schwa (upside down e mark for the "uh" sound) Plus the book was out of his reading level. HOWEVER....He has learned the schwa quite easily in cle's LA and read the first story in the 1st grade reader last week and really enjoyed it! (his reading level has just jumped!) He did the first lesson in the workbook as well, which is all about the schwa.

He's also doing R&S Bible Nurture Reader 1 unit 2,3. It's Bible Stories that he can read on his own, and then do a reading workbook and phonics workbook on that story. I really like that we are combining Bible and Reading with this. The phonics instruction is really thourough IMO.

I think the CLE reader is a much more enjoyable fictional story. He read it aloud to me and I even found myself caught up in the story about a little boy afraid of the thunder. Dad steps in and explains how God can keep us safe, and even though lightning burned the neighbors barn down last year, good came out of it because the new barn was better than their old one.
Good moral stories.

If you think he needs the phonics, but doesn't do well with ETC, then why not try another inexpensive phonics workbook?

Here are some suggestions:

MCP (Modern Curriculum Press):
Plaid Phonics (begins with level K)

CLP (Christian Liberty Press):
Adventures in Phonics (3 levels: A, B, & C)

EPS (Educator's Publishing -- same publisher as ETC):
Primary Phonics (for grades K-2)

Spectrum, Scholastic, and Teacher Created Materials make phonics workbooks (the Scholastic ones are based on Clifford, and they have readers as well as workbooks). I know there are some more, but I'm not thinking of them right now.

We have loved BJUP's reading program for the elementary years. The variety of genres, the color and themes, have appealed to all of my children with a wide variety of personalities and learning styles. The TE and workbooks teach tremendous skills!

I know 2nd grade has phonics review. I believe 3rd & 4th have optional phonics review as well.

I have used it as a complete learn to read program : )

I know what pages you mean. We don't do those pages. I figure my kids are reading well from the readers they are doing, I see no need for overkill which I think it would be with those pages. FWIW my older dd hates those pages LOL
She and I are doing ETC 4 orally. She likes doing it orally much more than doing it written (says it takes to long when she works alone : )
