I am sure you have seen many programs that boast about the speed at which people are capable of reading. Do you think it is legit? Also, have you had any of your dc take speed reading courses? If so, which ones have you tried?

I haven't, but my roommate in college did, and she swore by it. She was, indeed, a very fast reader! She did Evelyn Woods. It was apparently quite expensive: several thousand dollars over ten years ago.

I was taught in ps in 6th grade and I read faster than anyone I know. I have good retention even though it 'looks' like I'm just skimming/scanning.

I can't recommend a particular program, but it has saved me countless hours in college and beyond.

Thank you ladies for your replies.. I guess speed reading is not that popular in the homeschooling world. I am not really looking for my dd to become a speed reader in the sense of reading 1000 words per minute, I would just like her to become a more proficient reader and get her up to her grade level in her rate of reading. Right now as a 6th grader, she only reads about 130 words per minute and I know that she needs to be reading faster because it takes forever for her to get her reading done and I believe her slowness has caused her to hate reading.
