I would consider dropping it IF you really are going to keep up with it in his writing. I have had good intentions in that area at times, but haven't always followed through. :)

I also would keep the possibility of revisiting formal grammar at some point in the future. Maybe when he's in 8th grade, or maybe one semester in high school you might consider refreshing those grammar skills. Or adding something like Daily Grams as a refresher.

hmmm, we are just starting at age 16 and an almost 12 yr old! The plan is to do Analytical Grammar in one year and pretty much be done. We tried Easy Grammar once but didn't care for it too much.

Just check and see what your state requires for English. My dd has to have english 4yrs in high school. I am doing 1semister of english and 1 semister of literature. 9th is world lit. 10th is american lit .(not sure what lit to use in 11th and 12th.

I also suggest just letting him write, and addressing the grammar as you go. This is what I have always done with my son. I have also read to him A LOT, and he has and does listen to audio books. I really believe this gives a child an "ear" for correct language usage. We've done practically no formal grammar study, just addressed it as we went along and it came up in his writing. Finally, in 8th grade, I felt I really should do some, 'cause everyone else did, lol! So I bought a program that focused on grammar for the first half of the year, and writing for the second half. My son started the grammar portion and was just whizzing along, so after a couple of weeks I ended up having him take the final test. He scored 94%. So needless to say we just addressed the couple things he missed, and moved on. I relate this just to reiterate that I feel a child really can learn grammar in a more natural way.
All this being said, I probably will have my son go through Analytical Grammar before completing high school, just to familiarize him with the rest of the grammar terminology we haven't hit yet, and for the intellectual exercise of diagramming.

My daughter is about 10 and this is our last year with a grammer program. We are zooming thru it because so far the whole book as been a review for her (FLL4) I bought LLATL and will be using if after we finish. If it looks like she is starting to lack I will just do the daily grams or what ever is out there at the time.
