Re: levels versus grades! How do you do it?

re: Re: levels versus grades! How do you do it?

jrp, some moms have to "hide" the grades from dc who are working in a level or two lower and probably have been to a typical school situation. Seeing these "lower" levels just creates a negative in their minds so the moms just help take care of that issue to begin w/. Moms make sure their dc focus on what's important which is learning the material.

Agree w/Kerby. After four years in ps, my 4th grade dd's handwriting was appalling: about on the level with a sloppy second grader. We had selected a workbook commiserate with her skills, but when she saw the grade level on the book along with the pictures of little dancing bunnies and such on every page, she flat out refused. In such a case, I see why the parent would want to de-emphasize or hide the grade level.

Since we weren't budging on the handwriting practice, we told dd we would get the 4th grade book, but she would have to work her tail off; if not, it was dancing bunnies for her. She really has worked hard, and her handwriting is really improving.

I understand that. It makes sense to do that. I was misunderstanding the post and thinking that parent didnt want their kid to know the grade they were in. I think i need some B12. Lol!

We do the same: keep them in the same grade that they would be in public school, but work at their level. Our main reason for doing this, however, is that they will be going to public high school. If they were staying home for high school, I might go with whatever was the lowest level they were working on, so they could graduate early.

For things like Sunday School and non-academic classes, I just keep them in their grade. They can be with their peers. For schoolwork, they work at the level that is most appropriate for their abilities. My girls are at grade level on some things, way ahead on others, and below grade level on a couple of others.
