This is interesting to me. I always kept me kids in the "grade" they were supposed to be in but let them work at their own pace. i.e. My dd 15 was in 6th math but 8th grade. how do others do it. I am open to ideas for my little one. She is only 22mths but is already very bright. She is counting and knows a few of her letters. She picks up things and concepts very quickly so I dont want to hold her back. How do you guys do this? Do you keep them in their respective grades for scocial purposes (church and sports team etc)? Ideas?

I do it just like you. I can't think of any benefits of doing it any other way so I'm drawing a blank here.

I would keep a child in their "grade" unlesss they were truly gifted and able to skip a grade. Also I have seen some list their child in grade 1/2, to show they were working on two grade levels.

I have them in their respective "grades" for outside purposes based on their ages/what the would be if in ps.
For school here at home, I use their "grade" for a guideline and go from there. If they are able to work 'ahead' then I go w/ that book, or if they struggle 'behind' then I go w/ another book. The particular level is irrelelvant. I haven't had to deal w/ this much but it's in the back of my mind.
If dc have always been hsed, it's fairly easy to "hide" the grade that is on some books. If they have been in a system of any kind, then it's a bit harder and you need to try to explain on their level as best you can.

I do it just like you. They're in the grade they're supposed to be in, working at their own level. I'm racking my brain also, trying to figure out why someone would do it another way-unless they want their kids to graduate early???? Interesting...
Of course in a homeschool setting, grade levels aren't important-it's for all they do 'out there' that matters.

On paper, I keep them in the grade level that they would be in if they were in public school. Both of the children I am hs'ing now are ahead in one or more classes. There's no reason to "up" their grade level and for testing purposes, it can't be anything but good to be doing work "above" grade level.

When it was necessary to put a grade-level label on my dc, I used the grade they would have been in if they'd gone to school. Otherwise, I just chose materials that were good for them, and we started using them...whenever we wanted to, not necessarily in September.

I cant think of any other way to do it either but I was reading some posts about people "hiding" the grade on the books and not wanting to do grades. This kinda puzzled me so I thought maybe there was something I was overlooking. My brain has been in a mommy fog the past week or two.
