Does A Beka Fall apart in the 7th grade for science & Math?

Does A Beka Fall apart in the 7th grade for science & Math?

Hi,

I have hear A Beka sicence and math fall apart around the 7th grade. Do any of you find that to be true?

I was wondering how many of you out there have made the switch from A Beka science and math to Apologia and Saxon? Why did you change? Were you glad you did? What did you like or dislike about both? Did you change back?

I should add my dd is slightly advance for her age will be in the 6th grade but would be doing Saxon 7/6 and Apologia general science.

Thanks,
Teresa

P.S. It seems like there are more A Beka books for sale. Does this mean more people are using A Beka, or just that more people keep their Saxon and Apologia books?

re: Curriculum changes. A Beka to Apologia & Saxon?

I can't speak for everyone, but when the first Saxon text was published (Math 76, and actually, it was photocopies of handwritten pages) the sound of people bailing out of ABeka dn going to Math 76 was like Niagara Falls, lol. Apparently, many folks were not happy with ABeka.

I tried going from straight A Beka to Apologia and Saxon one year...............We went right back to A Beka the next year.

Apologia and Saxon were definitely not for us.

Im not sure if this will answer your question or not. But we switched from Saxon to Abeka for math. Saxon is a wonderful program but one of the reason's we switched was b/c it was too much review, and the book is not made to be written in. Abeka is a work text, ds loves the colors of it, and the review is not as much as Saxon. Plus ds had great success using Abeka in private school.

For science we switched from Abeka to Apologia. Abeka science has wonderful photographs and cover a wealth of information in a year. What seemed to be lacking were hands on experiments. Ds loves science and was completely bored just reading and answering questions. With Apologia it was a better fit from the way the book was written, like it was for the child. There were plenty of easy to do hands on experiments and note booking ( in the elementary levels.) for reinforcements.

I hope this helps!

Bump.

People have said this, but as a 11 year Abeka user I'm not sure what everyone is talking about. I have seen many people drop Saxon for all the same reasons people drop Abeka. I know plenty of people who were successful in college having taken Abeka in high school exclusively. I think people get hung up on the fact that the book to them is outdated. Math is math. Algebra is Algebra. How you go about it may be different, but the principles are the same. I don't like Apologia. Abeka science and all the wonderful, colorful pictures have always appealed to my children.

There is a big jump in Abeka (and other publishers) between 6th and 7th grade. Also, the junior high and high school levels start to require deeper levels of teaching. So my personal opinion based on observation is that a lot of homeschoolers switch to Saxon and Apologia at that point because they find it easier for them to teach or easier for their child to do independently. This is even more true for high school unless they go with DVDs, satellite, co-op classes, etc.

I'm not sure it is a reflection on the curriculum itself...maybe more of a reflection on the circumstance of homeschooling.
