Looking for next year. My ds12 will be doing MMTM, but I'm not sure I want to use Writing with the Best Vol II. He is a very reluctant writer and didn't much care for Writitng with the Best Vol. I when we did it a few years ago (not sure if I did either). Is there a good writing proagram you have used for this age and loved it?? He will also be doing the writing that will be in the second half of R&S 6.

Both of my boys have enjoyed both Writing Strands and Jump In. I highly recommend both.

We discovered EIW or Essentials in Writing this year and really like how it is set up with a DVD to teach and an excellent workbook to use step by step.
It's working very well with my DS. Take a look at the different grade levels and if your still not sure all them...they have excellent customer service and will guide you to the best level to start with. they have online DVD samples and workbook samples.

My kids don't mind the Wordsmith program. If he's really reluctant you could start him with Wordsmith Apprentice even though it's supposed to be for gr 4-6. The whole book is written as though you work for a newspaper. It starts out with you filling out a form about yourself and sneaks the writing in. My three kids didn't even realize they were writing. Highly recommended!!

We, too, love Essentials in Writing. I have used this curriculum for two years with all three of my kids and have seen some excellent growth in writing. I used the 8th grade version with my daughter last year when she was in 9th grade because their high school levels weren't complete yet and she did well with it even though it was one grade level too low. This year, everyone is on grade level and loving it.
Good luck! HTH, PP

I can't say enough about Essentials in Writing if you want a DVD lesson to present the material that's in the writing workbook.
Otherwise, I'd recommend something like Jump In. It's broken down into small bite sized chunks and written to the student. It's colorful and conversational, but very academic at the same time. It teaches various forms of writing.
